Comparison of direct low density lipoprotein cholesterol measurement with the Friedewald formula and alternative formulas

<b>Aim:</b> Our aim was to compare the direct enzymatic measurement with four formulas which are used in determining value of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels.<br /> <b>Material and methods:</b> A total 33842 patients’ files were retrospectively reviewed data collected. Triglyceride (TG) group 1, 2, 3, 4 5 consisted TG levels ≤99 mg/dl, 100-199 200-299 300-399 mg/dl ≥ 400 respectively. LDL-Group composed LDL-C≤100 101-130 131-160 160-190 >190 respectively.<br <b>Results</b>: All tended undervalue LDL-C concentrations compared method (p<0.001 for all). The Chen formula had higher degree correlation other formulas. Acceptable result Friedewald 53.77%, 62.72%, Hattori 24.72, Anandaraja 45.98%. Bland-Altman plot results showed disagreement significant proportional systematic bias method. There no agreement calculated when subgrouped according levels. No between found. Correlation analysis moderate high level Friedewald, Chen, calculations, whereas correlation. mostly misclassified 3 subjects, subjects.<br <b>Conclusion</b>: might be an acceptable alternative
